My new favorite TV show: Running in Heels

I have no idea how this happened but I started watching this Style Network reality show called Running in Heels. The show centers around 3 interns at Marie Claire magazine who are all living together in an apartment in NYC. It’s so entertaining to watch how ruthless they are to get the best assignments and then make each other feel jealous of their success. Great show.

Billy Bob Thornton vs. Jian Ghomeshi

CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi recently interviewed The Boxmasters on his daily radio show “Q.” The results were riveting. Jian handled the situation brilliantly as Billy Bob attempted to manipulate the situation by not answering questions in order to make a point that mentioning his acting career was irrelevant when speaking about his band. Billy Bob came off as immature, childish and a bully. Jian came off as insightful, well spoken, tactful, direct, calm and unflappable.

As someone who has interviewed many musicians and celebrities I have had all sorts of experiences. I’ve had great interviews and horrible interviews where people refused to answer questions, used one word answers, threatened to kick my ass, and got confrontational with me while they were trying to prove a point about how they hate doing press. I truly have the utmost respect for Jian in seeing him turn this situation around. Listen to Jian and all the other great CBC radio programming such as The Point with Aamer Haleem on CBC Radio 1 Sirius 137.

Right away Billy Bob won’t answer his questions but it gets good right around the 5:30 mark…

Jury Duty reverse audition

My boyfriend has jury duty. Every day he has to call a phone number to see if he’s required to attend. All week long he got off scott free, until last night when he found out he had to show up this morning at the courthouse. Personally, I think the idea of jury duty is kind of exciting. “It’s your chance to do your civic duty! It is an opportunity to be of service to your country” I keep telling him. He isn’t buying it.

Last night before bed he kept trying to figure out what he could wear to make sure that they didn’t pick him. He mentioned various outfits of jeans and T-shirts with obscene sayings or polo shirts with a turned up collar and a hat and tried to predict how they would perceive him. It reminded me of an audition, except instead of trying to wear the perfect outfit to make them pick you he’s trying to figure out what to wear to make them not pick him. I could certainly offer a few outfits from my closet that didn’t work out so well for me.

UPDATE: My boyfriend said that when he got to jury duty they told a story of how some guy showed up wearing a t-shirt that said GUILTY on it. They sent him home and rescheduled him for another day. Consider yourself warned.

My favorite new TV show: The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency

I just caught the pilot episode of the new HBO show “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” starring Jill Scott. It is fantastic! It’s funny and touching and it loooks beautiful. It takes you into a whole new world with interesting characters and a great storyline. Definitely check it out. Well done HBO.

Elizabeth Gilbert on how to live your life

I loved Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Eat, Pray, Love and I also love TED TALKS. Like the divine meeting of chocolate and peanut butter, here they are together. Elizabeth gives a great talk about creative ‘genius’ and how to live life as an artist, no matter what kind of artist you are. Actor, writer, painter, Subway sandwich artist.
